İlber Ortaylı'nın Ardından

This text is not an academic article, but if it were, I would rewind everything a bit for the introduction and start like this: 'On the afternoon of March 13, 2026, having finished her class, Fatma picked up her phone, which she hadn't checked for a while, only to find a pile of accumulated messages and missed calls. She didn't take some of the messages seriously, as there had been many false reports on this matter in the media recently. However, she could only be sure after calling Başak (Karaman) to confirm.' Many readers have likely encountered articles starting in a similar fashion at least once; this is an introductory style quite widely used, especially in the Anglo-Saxon publishing world. I am not sure if İlber Hoca would have been particularly fond of this opening. Be it in his academic and newspaper articles, his lectures, or his chats and conferences, one of the things he did best was to captivate his readers or audience and keep their interest alive. This piece is just one of the countless thanks I could offer for everything İlber Hoca has contributed to my life so far, so boring the readers and driving them away is the absolute last thing I want. For a man who has been referred to by many adjectives—some positive, some negative—throughout his life, but never as 'boring,' the last thing I would want is to write a boring piece.
